I read a great post last week by Tim Tyrell-Smith of Tim’s Strategy about how to utilize career experts during your job search. Tim’s an advocate of hiring career experts and made three very valid points in his post. (1) If you could fix the problems in your resume without a large expense, you would; (2) many career experts offer quality advice on their blogs and Twitter accounts, free for the taking; and (3) if you feel a connection with a career expert or two from their blog posts and tweets, reach out to him/her and see if it makes sense to invest in a paid service.
Makes sense, right? I completely agree and think it’s a great idea. It’s one of the main reasons I do blog and tweet — to help you out and share my expertise.
So who should you follow? The Career Collective and Resume Chicks contain most of my favorites. Career Thought Leaders is another great collection of leaders in the space. Then take our tidbits of free info – and just as Tim suggests, if you feel you still need more, go with the voice with which you feel most comfortable and email or call to inquire about a more detailed, personalized service. It’s a smart way to manage your job search.
