The Career Collective’s topic last month was how to use social media for your job search. You can read my post here. For those of you naysayers or those dragging your heels getting started, I wanted to share a real-life case story of how using social media has helped me professionally.
In what seems like an eternity ago, I was originally turned on to Twitter by a colleague and friend, Erin Kennedy. I became friends online with Julie Walraven, another professional resume writer, first through Twitter and then on Facebook. Julie and I have yet to meet in person, but we picked up the phone up and carried our professional dialogue over into real life. Another writer Susan Joyce had shared some insightful SEO and website development advice through a professional association’s newsletter recently that got me thinking. I realized I was at a critical point professionally where it would be smart to invest further in my website and online presence. Julie had recently started a blog on just this subject so I reached out to her. She in turn introduced me to Kim Woodbridge. I would never have received my intro to Kim without having met Julie (who lives more than 1,000 miles away) through Facebook and Twitter, the latter of which I was introduced to by Erin.
So it can happen. You can network, make introductions, and advance your career (or business) through Facebook and Twitter. This is just one example. It’s happening every day, but if you’re sitting on the sidelines, it will be happening for others, not you!
P.S.
Stay tuned later this summer for some exciting changes to my site and blog!
